As Summer announces its presence with that typical Queensland humidity, lazy beach days are high on my priority; filled with colourful bikinis, salt on my skin and a cider in hand. Of course, Â I also want to keep in shape during the festive season, so I began to wonder: whatâs the best way to workout during the sweltering summer months?
For me personally, Iâm quite choosy with what kind of exercise I do; I want a workout that is nourishing to my entire bodyÂ âÂ something that lengthens, tones, motivates and most importantly, is fun! I also tend to stay away from gymâs, as my body responds best to low impact exercise, so when I came across Pure Healthâs Bounce classes, I had a good feeling Iâd found the perfect workout combination!
What is a bounce class, you ask? Essentially, itâs a high intensity, low impact choreographed class â much like an aerobic workout âÂ thatâs performed on a rebounder trampoline. Providing 80% less shock absorption to your joints, itâs been found to be 68% more efficient than running (according to studies from NASA), making it the perfect solution for those with sensitive areas or old/prolonged injuries! In fact, the class was originally designed with this in mind, when Pure Healthâs founder Marina found herself longing for a workout that wouldnât put extra strain on her injured knee.
Deciding to bite the bullet, I headed along to Pure Health to try the workout myself. I must admit, I did have a lot of concerns as I walked into the class, mostly about how much impact it would have on my joints (which are quite sensitive)…and also about the high risk of me falling on my face. Oh yes, I was fully prepared to be the âunco ducklingâ in the room, and I made sure to set my mini tramp at the very back of the room, away from expert bouncers, closest to the door. Taking a step onto the rebounder and looking down at the springs, all sort of visions filled my mind of catapulting off the trampoline and taking out a room full of fierce fitness queens.
But then something amazing happened…the music started, I found my rhythm (mostly) and before I knew it we were 30 minutes into the class!
Working out to Laurenâs personalised playlist âÂ filled with dance jams, pop hits and classic 90s/00s favourites such as âBackstreet’s Back,â and Justin Timberlakeâs âLike I Love Youâ Â âÂ we bounced, kicked, sprinted on the spot and pumped our arms in time to the beat; sweating and smiling through the burn. After around 40 minutes, it was time for a quick stretch, before finishing off with some squats, ab-work and a final cool down.
Around me were women of varying ages and body types, and everyone was free to work as hard or moderately as they liked; thatâs the thing about Pure Health, they encourage you where you are at, and itâs an overwhelmingly positive environment open to all! The instructor Lauren Holloway, who teaches across all three studios, was not only extremely knowledgeable, but also friendly, and eager to make sure everyone has fun. Itâs something that Lauren believes is central to what makes their studio so special.
âI have been working at Pure for over 3 years and I love teaching classes here more and more everyday! The Bounce classes are a full body workout â not to mention theyâre really fun,â she said. âYou totally get lost in the movements and music, and don’t even realise how hard you are working; it’s by far my favourite class to choreograph and teach!
One thing I loved about Pure Health is that they are like a tight knit community, and this becomes more than evident in the time it takes me to have a quick chat to Lauren; several women popping their heads in the door to say hello. Everyone you see has a smile on their face.
